THIS YEAR AT MARIETTA GARDENS This year (2006) will be a great year for Marietta Gardens. There is quite an array of new choices. Our new introductions will be exciting additions to any home garden. There are new shapes, new sizes, new forms, and new colors for your enjoyment. John has continued his hybridizing for unusual edges in diploids. This year A SERVANTS HAND was his top pick. It is a coral pink flower with a feathered gold edge. It also has the beginning of teeth. Gold edges are also dominant in PINK PUDDLES and SWEET DEVOTION. PINK PUDDLES has a ruffled gold edge which really shows off the vibrant pink petals. SWEET DEVOTION is a creamy white flower highlighted by a rich gold edge. John’s DREAMSICLE is a rich peach polychrome with an exquisite ruffled edge. It is out of TET SILOAM RALPH HENRY. Faye is known for her tetraploids, eye patterns, and ruffled edges. This year is no exception. Her MARIETTA PRINCESS, out of last year’s successful JELLY MAKER, is a flower to watch. It is a lovely peach set off by an award-winning eye and edge combination. Hot could be used to describe three of Faye’s other introductions. SACRED FIRE is a glistening red with a bright throat that complements the red petals. It is very sun fast. Another sun fast beauty is MAPPING KANSAS. It is a dark red with a black eye and dark veins. HOT MOTION is a burning hot orange with an even hotter edge. Elizabeth is known for her blues and for her spider variants. This year has been outstanding for her. CAROLINA BOUND is a very pretty blue bitone with an unusual eye pattern and edge. DUST TO DAWN is a reddish black purple with extremely heavy substance. SPY GLASS is a chalky lavender highlighted by a watermark. STARGATE ANGEL and STARGATE ECLIPSE are two exciting spider variants with unusual forms. Both have pulsating blue-tone eye zones. SWIZZLE STICK is a fresh baby pink spider variant. MARIETTA TRILOGY features a burgundy chevron and a burgundy eye pattern. GRANDPA OSCIE is an introduction of Oscie Whatley. Just as Oscie was a master among hybridizers, GRANDAPA OSCIE should become a top perform among yellow tetraploids. Even though Oscie is known throughout the daylily world for his large yellow cultivars, such as RAM, SOLAR MUSIC, PULSAR, and BUTTER CREAM, GRANDPA OSCIE will reach a new level among yellow tetraploids. Although running his hybridizing program in a very small backyard garden, Oscie was for years on the cutting edge of adding new genes to the tetraploid breeding pool through converting many fine diploids. He and a group of fellow hybridizers made St. Louis a Mecca for many years for tetraploid enthusiasts. Never did Oscie fail to share his knowledge with young daylily breeders. He will always be remembered.
