The tetraploid breeding program at Marietta Gardens has truly emerged, not only for Faye who has been our pioneer tetraploid breeder but for John and Elizabeth as well.  We are pleased to introduce 9 tetraploids for 2001—two from Elizabeth, four from Faye, and three from John.  These fine tetraploids range in color from the deep yellow MISTER HOMER to the purple eyed and edged SKY PAINTING and MAMA’S BLUEBERRY PIE.  Elizabeth’s 9” very dark red SPIDER WALK will be welcomed by those who like spider-like or different daylilies.  Our tetraploids offer form, intense ruffling, excellent branching and bud count along with repeat bloom, and — most importantly — very pretty, attractive colors and color patterns.  And the future holds even more excitement.  The edges and eyes are getting wider and offer more contrast.  Several seedlings from FOOLED ME breeding have been outstanding.  The colors are getting brighter and more vivid, pinks with rose eyes and edges; yellows with vivid red edges and eye.  There are solid colors too in rose red, pink, yellow, purple, and lavender.  A real kaleidoscope.

Before we get too carried away with tetraploids, we need to consider that Elizabeth and John are producing some of the finest diploids available today.  Elizabeth’s STARGATE PORTAL is a shocker with its blue eye on magenta-purple flowers.  John’s program is producing fringed, lacey, and serrated edges in diploids — and who said tetraploids had a lock on all the advancements in daylilies?  BENNIE McARTHUR, MAMA’S LEMON PIE, KAY’S FROLIC,  CATHERINE W. JONES and MAPPING GEORGIA all display some degree of fringing normally found only in tetraploids.

From Elizabeth’s hybridizing, you have a wide choice in 2001.  If you are looking for pinks, the small, heavy substanced WELCOME TO PARADISE is a must.  BILL WATSON TOO in rose is every much as good as the original BILL WATSON.  The light rose pink BAROMETER SOUP boasts excellent form and ruffling in addition to its lovely color.  Want something quite different?  Try ALLEY CAT BLUES, an lighter edged reverse bitone in shades of purple and lavender or the variant CANDLE IN THE WIND.

John offers four new doubles that will knock your sock off for their bright, vibrant colors—the rose BE STILL MY HEART,  the light pink RARIN TO GO, the lavender OUT ON THE TOWN, and the purple OOH HAVE MERCY.  Stunning colors and plants that rebloom three times.

We are pleased to continue to introduce three fine daylilies from the breeding program of the late Clarke Yancey and John Allgood who is continuing this work—TRICOLOR EXPLOSION, a tri-toned red; ANGELS OF DREAMS, a pale pink with a lavender eye; and SHADES OF TWILIGHT, a lavender purple with yellow and green.  There will be more fine daylilies coming from this hybridizing combination.  Watch for them.

You are welcome to visit Marietta Gardens where we specialize in daylilies.  We are an official AHS Display Garden and are open for business and visitors from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. daily.  We are generally in the garden during the bloom season, but please call before you come to make sure you are not disappointed.  For those who have visited us before, do come again as we are continuing to improve our display and sales area on 904.  We have many of the newest and best daylilies available on display for you to see and hundreds of fine varieties for you to purchase.
